Lenses for sport
Lens colours for specific sports
In sport, colour matters. The right lens colour can improve the wearer’s reaction times. Or make it easier to see tracks in the snow. Even to spot a flying ball. With endurance sports, colour can make it more comfortable and less tiring to see
This guide makes it easy to select the right sunglasses for specific sports.
Grey lenses improve perception when on the water making them ideal for sailing, windsurfing and power-boating. They make it easier to see dark fish or into deep water when fishing in daylight hours. In fact, grey lenses offer excellent all-round vision suitable for many sports from tennis to skiing and for most weather conditions.
For tennis, green lenses work well too, making it easier to see the ball against the sky or the court.
Brown and copper colours absorb blue light which the eye can find hard to use. These colours enhance contrasts making it easier to see, especially in bright light, against a blue sky or on water. Golfers too, can judge distances with accuracy. Fish can be seen hiding in grassy river beds. Contours and hazards in the terrain can be seen more clearly by cyclists, athletes and skiers through a brown or copper lens.
For golfers, purple lenses also improve the ability to see the ball in the rough.
Orange and yellow lenses let the light in but keep grit and flying debris out so they will work for runners, golfers and cyclists at dawn, dusk and on cloudy days. In low light conditions, anglers can see better with this colour. Orange and yellow are also good for skiers in foggy weather conditions.
