Polaroid were overwhelmed by the fantastic number of journalists, celebrities, stylists, writers and bloggers who joined us for our 75th Anniversary and 2012 Sunglasses Collection Launch yesterday. Held at the elite No 5 Cavendish Square in London, the event gave a preview of our new sunglass collections, which will launch on the high street and online next month.
Over 130 VIP guests from the fashion, optical and national press viewed the new Polaroid Best under the sun heritage collection. Also available was our 2012 men’s, women’s, sports and kid’s sunglasses. The day was buzzing from start to finish.
A special feature of the launch included the display of original Polaroid sunglasses which date back to the 1930s when we first launched the brand. As we celebrate our 75th anniversary this year, it was the perfect opportunity to show how original designs from the archives shape today’s fashions.
Alex Reid arrived with James Bond stuntwoman, Sarah Donohue, celebrity publicist Richard Curson, and elite trainer Cengiz Halabi, all from Famously Fit. And Rosie Fortescue from TV’s Made in Chelsea arrived with Nathalie from No No Coco choose a pair of aviator style sunglasses from our new Best under the sun collection.
We’re delighted with the amazing response we’ve received so far, with the press, Twitter and blogosphere full of positive comments.
International football player, Carlton Cole (left), wearing Polaroid Rebel sunglasses, with comedian Kojo (right).
Footballers set the bar when it comes to style. So when we spotted international football player, Carlton Cole, wearing his Polaroid sunglasses at a comedy gig in London, we couldn’t resist taking a snap.
Carlton started his career at Chelsea and is now a striker for West Ham United. He also plays internationally for England, so it was great to see him taking a night off and supporting up and coming British comedian, Kojo, from the audience at the sell-out Live N Kicking show at Hackney Empire.

Did you see Choice FM’s DJ, Kojo, wearing his Polaroid sunglasses at his sell-out show at the Live N Kicking event at Hackney Empire last week? Alongside British rapper, Angel, Kojo looked stylish in his pair of Rebel Polaroids, which feature in our Best under the sun collection.
Dubbed ‘The Fresh Prince of Hackney’, Kojo is fast becoming one of the biggest talents to arise from the comedy circuit. Also at the show were stars from the sports and entertainment world, including superstar songstress Jamelia, and Eastenders Ricky Norwood and Preeya Kalidas.
2012 is a landmark year for Polaroid Eyewear as we celebrate our 75th Anniversary. Dr Edwin Land invented the first synthetic polarizer back in 1937 and went on to establish the well known fashion and quality polarized sunglass brand that we are today.
This year will see a host of celebrations all over the world to mark our amazing milestone in polarization expertise and stunning design.
To coincide with our anniversary and the upcoming launch of our new 2012 Best under the sun collection, we’ve announced a worldwide collaboration with the UK based charity Sightsavers. We’ll help to fund their work to restore sight and prevent blindness in children and adults living in some of the world’s poorest countries. We’ll do this by donating £1 per pair, from every single pair of sunglasses in the Best under the sun collection sold during 2012.
£1 can make a big difference. £1 could help 20 people combat river blindness, and £1 could protect 2 people against trachoma, the eye disease which causes blindness. We’re hoping to raise a great amount of funds to save the sight of thousands of people during 2012. Plus, we’re supporting one of their celebrity ambassadors, Lorraine Kelly, by providing her with Polaroid sunglasses to keep her eyes protected from the sun.
