The final event in the Silver Anniversary Polaroid Eyewear 10K Series was the Sunday ‘Festival of Running’ once again hosted by the fantastic location of Loch Lomond Shores. Over 600 hundred primary and pre-school runners, 150 5k runners including those representing their secondary schools in the new senior schools 5K competition, plus a record 1220 entrants for the Vale of Leven 10k.
The flagship race as always was the final 10k of the Series – and there were a few additions which proved popular with the running group. Firstly, we had four pipers arranged by Polaroid Security Officer Jim Priestly and including his son Euan and his friends. The sound of the pipes at the start, half way and especially the finish fairly lifted the spirits of the runners and was a very welcome addition. Secondly, the course was altered from recent years to take the runners back along the cycle path alongside the River Leven – and comments from participants would indicate this is a change that is set to stay.
At the front of the pack Tewoldeberhan Mengisteab ran a blistering 29:57 – and for only the 9th time in the series history had the 30 minute barrier been broken. Shettleston Harriers took 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th places.
Fiona Matheson of Falkirk Victoria running club took 1st Female place in a time of 35:28, and running on her birthday again, Alison Docherty took 2nd Female place.
David Kennedy receives a recognition of his 25 years as race director from Polaroid Eyewear MD Paul Sheerin.
The final event of the day was a little more relaxed – a barbeque and family fun day on the shores of Loch Lomond for some 700 Polaroid employees and families plus invited guests. The last presentation was one of real significance. After 25 years as Race Director, David Kennedy had announced his intent to stand down and move to help from the sidelines rather than centre stage. David has been the inspiration and striving force for the series for all this time, and literally thousands of runners have enjoyed their Thursday evening and Sunday Vale 10k’s as a result of his vision and dedication. He leaves some big boots to fill, but the Series deserves them to be filled, it just might take a few more of us.
Thanks to all who sponsored, volunteered, assisted, ran and made this anniversary to remember – see you next year.

Thursdays 26th May and 2nd June has seen rounds two and three of the four round Polaroid Eyewear 10k Series. With each event attracting over 1,100 entrants the Silver Anniversary has exceeded the hopes of the organising team in getting as many people out and running in West Dunbartonshire..
The Clydebank race had perfect conditions and a record number of runners gathering for the 7.30pm start time. First male was Tesgai Tewelde running in a time of 30:48, closely followed by Paul Sorrie and Allan Adams – all of Shettleston Harriers. Nice to note that the race marked a new personal best for Paul, you can see him below wearing his distinctive and well worn bandana.
Lesley Chisholm of Garscube Harriers took first female place in a time of 36:15, second was Jill Knowles running with the Scottish Prison Service AAC. The following Thursday, and with lovely early evening summer weather, the series moved to Dumbarton.
Another week, another record entry number enjoying the route along the Dumbarton to Glasgow Cycle path and back to the starting point of Dumbarton Academy School.
The sunshine, home baking stall and tremendous support along the route made for a real community and party feel, and once again the Dumbarton course and support was conducive to the athletes running some good times. Read more…

Polaroid's Paul Sheerin, Phyllis Tsai, Elaine Morrison, Sean Cargill, Andy Warnock and Helen Connolly at the starting line.
Last Thursday saw the first 10k race in the 2011 Polaroid Eyewear Series, held at Helensburgh on the Clyde coast. With 1,120 entrants, the highest pre-entries ever, the Silver anniversary event is shaping up to beat all records for participation. Take a look at this video coverage from Helensburgh’s URTV.
The overall race winner was Tewoldeberhan Mengisteab, one of the Shettleston Harriers in a time of 30:30. The first female was Carol Setchell also of Shettleston Harriers in a time of 36:28.
The event was honoured to have Lachie Stewart presenting prizes. Lachie, a local resident of West Dunbartonshire was the 10,000 metres Commonwealth Gold Medal Winner at the 1970 games, and his time on that day remains the Scottish record for the distance.
The Polaroid Eyewear Series is very clear in its aim that whilst it provides accurate and organised races for Elite athletes, 90% of the runners we cater for are there to enjoy their run and race against only themselves. In that respect it was fantastic to see the numbers involved out enjoying their sport, whatever their pace. Congratulations to all the runners. In addition the massive entry level means that once the mainly fixed costs of running the series are covered, all the additional income is shared every year with the participating clubs ensuring more investment in sport at the ‘grassroots’ level.
The Series ‘Roadshow’ moves on this Thursday to Clydebank, and whilst entries are now closed for that event, it’s not too late for the Dumbarton or Vale runs! Go to www.polaroid-10k.co.uk to enter. Read more…

Get your trainers on! This weekend sees the first of the four races in the Polaroid Eyewear 10K Road Race Series. And Polaroid’s Paul Sheerin, Andy Warnock, Helen Connolly, Phyllis Tsai and I are taking part, sporting our specially commissioned 25th Anniversary running sunglasses.
This year’s event is set to be bigger and better than ever as we’re celebrating 25 years of the Polaroid Road Race Series. You can run one, two or all four races and all abilities are welcome. There’s still time to sign up.
The 10K road race series features four race locations, all close to our manufacturing facility in the Vale of Leven:
Or, there’s a Fun Run Festival on 12 June at Loch Lomond if you prefer something a little less energetic.
Lots of Polaroid staff plan to go to each of the events and show their support with their families. There is always a great atmosphere!
