The crew from PlanetSolar, the world’s largest solar powered boat, stopped off in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour as part of their 18 month journey around the world on their mission to promote renewable energy. Polaroid Eyewear is PlanetSolar’s exclusive sunglasses supplier, giving the crew glare-free vision as they sail.

The catamaran set sail from Monaco in September 2010, and has so far travelled more than 35,000 kilometres across Atlantic and the Panama Canal, and is currently sailing the Pacific heading for Singapore. It’s due to complete its mission and dock in Monaco in May.

Since leaving Monaco in September 2010, the PlanetSolar expedition has been making history as it continues the first ever attempt to sail around the globe using solar power to change the world’s attitude towards renewable energy.

Polaroid Eyewear is an official sponsor and sunglasses supplier to the crew for this unique challenge. So we’ve been following its groundbreaking world tour with pride.

Raphael Domjan, Founder and Co-Skipper of PlanetSolar said “Since we left Monaco last year, our Polaroid sunglasses have proved an indispensable part of our kit. PlanetSolarThe challenge that the PlanetSolar expedition is undertaking is immense. So we shudder to think what went through their minds when news came through their radars about the Japanese tsunami. We’ve been keeping an eye on them as Polaroid is proud to be a sponsor and official sunglasses supplier to PlanetSolar.

At the time the tsunami hit, PlanetSolar was in the vicinity, near to the Polynesian Marqueses islands in the Pacific Ocean. But thanks to the latest satellite communication technology, the team and the boat knew exactly what time the waves would strike the islands, so they could navigate to shelter.
