At the moment, autumn is in the air - for some of us anyway. But I’m still in America enjoying all that the golf courses of Central Oregon have to offer. Without a doubt, when you’re on a golf course at an elevation of 4,000 feet, golfing sunglasses are not an option – they’re a necessity. The higher the elevation, the more risk of potential damage from UV rays. It’s important to invest in a good sun cream too. There are even shirts that prevent UVA and UVB light from reaching your skin that are definitely worth considering. And if the weather is a little cloudy, there’s no reason to leave your sunglasses at home. Just the opposite in fact. I always keep a pair of Polaroid Sunglasses in my golf case no matter where I’m headed.

But, if it’s sun you’re looking for, head to Eagle Crest in Redmond, Oregon. There’s a Ridge Course, a Resort Course, a Challenge Course and an 18-hole putting course.  So whether you’re like me and just enjoy golfing rather than excel at it, there’s something for you. And, just as important perhaps, the resort gets 300 days of sunshine a year. A perfect excuse to invest in at least one pair of golfing sunglasses.

Don't forget your sunglasses even in winter

It’s December. And while everyone else is Christmas shopping and eating mince pies,  I’m competing in the winter league. Then, I eat the mince pies – and miss the opportunity to go shopping with my Christmas-obsessed wife.  Yesterday I had a great game. The course was hilly and the day mild. But, the wind still comes up even when the weather is good. I kept my golfing sunglasses on most of the time. By 2:00 the sun was so low in the sky, that I really needed them. Winter sun isn’t nearly so weak as we think. But what really made a difference was the protection I had from the wind. I could see that the other team and even my own partner were having trouble keeping their eyes fully open.

This year, I tried the new lavender lenses from Polaroid’s range for golfers. And I have to say they really help. I’m not much of a style guru and at first I found the colour a little…well…different. But now I’m a convert because I can see my ball out so much more quickly and easily – even in the rough. I also think the large lenses really help. I have full protection from the wind and the sunglasses are so light I forget I’m wearing them.

If you’re golfing this winter, don’t forget your sunglasses. They can really help make the round a lot more comfortable.

Pro 20:20 - good for more than golfing

Out here in the American West it’s hot. Cowboy hot. And that means the sun is bright and my sunglasses never leave my head until it’s dark and I’m ready to have ribs or a hamburger or some other American-style feast.  So far on this holiday I’ve been golfing, hiking, canoeing and driving long distances. It’s been great. And one of the reasons I’ve been so comfortable is my Polaroid sunglasses.

When I golfed, it was around 90 at the first hole and 96 when we finished. I wore a pair of Polaroid golfing sunglasses. And no matter how much I twisted and turned the sunglasses stayed put. My game was at the beginning of the holiday while we were in Illinois. I love the Mid-West for its hospitality and the general kindness and goodwill of the people you meet. The game was friendly and pleasant -  which means I played well but the men I golfed with played even better.

When it comes to golf bags, almost isn't good enough

My wife’s ambition knows no bounds. One minute she’s asking me to review Polaroid’s latest golf sunglasses, and the next she’s on about changing my golf bag. The fact is, my golf bag has been with me longer than my wife. Hmmm. There’s a joke in there somewhere… So, I guess she has a point. It’s a shame to wear the latest golf sunglasses and carry a bag that’s seen better days. So, I’ve been doing a bit of shopping. To save all of you out there an unnecessary shopping trip, here’s my top picks for golf bags.

Technix VII give you clear contrasts on bright days.

The thing about being married to someone who works with Polaroid sunglasses is that they are constantly asking you to try new sunglasses. Me, I’m content with my pair from last year. The lenses have a scratch- resistant coating and they’re still in great condition. So what does my wife do? She gives my perfectly good sunglasses to the neighbour’s boy. Suddenly, he’s zipping past our house in my  sunglasses while my wife rattles on about how the latest golf sunglasses could improve my game and will, in any case, be much better than no sunglasses at all. My wife wins again. So, I reluctantly agreed to try some new sunglasses…

In our corner of England, Saturday morning was raw and bright. I put on my new sunglasses with the lavender lens while I hit a few balls on the driving range. So far so good. Technix VII golfing sunglasses are lightweight, and have a slightly larger curved lens that protects the entire eye from wind. I don’t welcome change, but these sunglasses were definitely as comfortable as my last pair.

Golfing sunglasses – more important than I thought

Old men and golf fans had an exciting weekend. Since I happen to be both, it was particularly exciting. Tom Watson, a 59-year old man with a hip replacement almost won The Open. I say almost, but for me, it was a moral victory if not an actual one. When someone who’s older than me [...]

Cycling sunglasses are a big help.

My wife gave me a pair of Polaroid sunglasses for my daily cycle to the train station and back It’s part of her job to spread the word about Polaroid sunglasses, so I just said thank you and wandered off to read the paper. I wasn’t in the mood to be a guinea pig. But she’s [...]
