A view of Loch Lomand

You don’t train for the Calendonian Challenge overnight. In fact, I started last July – and so far it’s been both interesting and difficult. No matter what the conditions, I’ve been wearing styles from Polaroid’s extreme sports sunglasses - protection is important. And, even in Scotland, you never now when the sun will shine through.

The Caledonian Challenge continues – spring in Scotland

As spring gets closer, I find Polaroids extreme sports sunglasses are even more important. My training continues…

March

Crianlarich to Bridge of Orchy and back (26 miles)

This walk was designed to push us a bit in terms of distance. It follows the A82 going to Fort William and the train line to Inverness. Not the most spectacular walk but a nice one to pile the miles in. It included St Fillan’s Chapel, which was raised to a Priory by Robert the Bruce in 1318 and thereafter enjoyed some measure of privilege and protection from the Kings of Scotland.

Polaroid gets extreme: supporting the Caledonian Challenge

Thanks to Polaroid Eyewear, I participated in the Clipper round the World race last year. A new year needed a new challenge – and I knew Polaroid would offer plenty of support. After chatting with a friend about life after Clipper, he mentioned the Caledonian Challenge. I was intrigued, so I began putting my team together. .. Now, I’m preparing for the actual event on June 12th and 13th.

So, expect further posts on our progress.

Steady winds but not enough to break 10 knots. The race will be called off tomorrow anyway. We are now going into our emergency rations for food as the trip has been quite longer than planned. This usually means making do with what we find around.

Mother watch today, should be the last one for the trip. Managed to do it all without any patches as I have ran out of them. Hopefully I will be able to keep the seasickness away until Rio without drug. The ETA is now the 23rd or about 5 days later than planned.

Upwind sailing still which starts to be very boring, but at least we are moving even if not at the speed we would like to. Water maker is playing up so water rationed and to be used only for cooking and drinking.

equatorStill going upwind. Another challenge in this conditions is to keep the seasickness at bay. We passed the equator tonight, another land mark in this trip, and celebrated with a wee dram, but no ceremony.

Wind still coming up with 8 knots boat speed average. Going due south until we pass the corner of Brazil. Only helming required on deck as the sails are set which make the watches quite long and boring. This allows for a lot of thinking, maybe too much on how things could have been.

At last steady wind all day. The bad news is that we had Singapore on our beam in the morning and by evening they had overtaken us, not to be seen again.
