It’s been announced this week that Polaroid Eyewear is a finalist in The Chartered Institute of Marketing’s Marketing Excellence Awards.
As a short-lister in the Retail Category, we’re competing with Marks and Spencer, Unilever, PepsiCo, Dove and Topshop. We’re delighted.
We’ve heard from the Institute that they’ve had a huge level of interest in the Awards this year, with many exceptional entries impressing the judges. Polaroid Eyewear’s entry showcases the promotion of our Best under the sun heritage collection. It’s clearly caught the judges’ attention.

It’s great to see John Lewis launching a ‘Made in UK’ label to support British manufacturing as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility programme. Polaroid Sunglass lens manufacture is UK based in Scotland, so we’re all for flying the British flag.
British manufacturing for John Lewis is about having pride in the UK’s skills and craftsmanship. In the same way that Switzerland is highly regarded for fine timepieces, and Italy associated with gold jewellery, Britain’s traditional quality shines through its brand.

When it comes to extreme, it doesn’t get much tougher than this. The BBC filmed a group of young people with challenging behaviour, embarking on an expedition in the hostile artic of the North Pole. Good job the Polaroid extreme sports sunglasses, chosen by the entire expedition party, were up for the challenge.
During the programme, nineteen year old Luke Dicker, who suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, challenges the label of being unteachable. He tells of his journey with a group of exploration experts, while mentoring four youngsters with behavioural problems, as they embark on the expedition of a lifetime.
We have a lot of admiration for the participants, and for the leaders of the trek who are prepared to help others take on a challenge to turn their lives around. And with glare blocking properties and UV400 protection, their Polaroid sunglasses gave these trepid explorers a clear and safe view of the snowy plain.

The student winners with their Polaroid sunglasses, along with their lecturer Dr Michael Marck and me.
Last week I gave a lecture on Brand Management to fourth year honours students at Strathclyde Business School. It was exciting to be asked, and the students enjoyed taking part in my quiz to win Polaroid sunglasses. It made sure they were paying attention to my lecture!
It was also great to see the students impressed by Polaroid’s Best Under the Sun collection. The vintage styles were right up their street.
I’ve been asked to return to the School next year, and was pleased to pass on my knowledge to such up and coming talent. And as I’ve just become a Chartered Marketer, it was a good opportunity to put my skills to the test.
“You gave us such an interesting presentation. It is fantastic to hear both the theory and practice from a marketing professional, said Nicola Stewart from the School. “A guest speaker who motivates and interacts so well with the class is hard to come by”.
