Last week I went to a Sightsavers networking event at the House of Lords in London. Sightsavers is a non-profit organisation which aims to eliminate avoidable blindness in adults and children in developing countries. And Polaroid Eyewear will be working with Sightsavers in 2012.
I was keen to meet with the Directors of the programme, and fellow donors to learn more about Sightsavers work. It’s a fantastic charity that, like Polaroid Eyewear, works hard to protect the eyes and raise the awareness of harmful UV rays.

The mud. The rain. The sun? Could it really have been the Glastonbury Festival this weekend?!
There was a great line up this year, including rappers True Tiger, who were kitted out with Polaroid sunglasses for the event, and Jay-Z and U2. The true star of the show this year was Beyoncé who stole the headlines with dazzling hotpants and her amazing stage presence.
The weather wasn’t kind for set up but it did bring out the best in stylish coats, jackets and glamorous umbrellas. But then the sun came out much to the delight of the revellers enjoying the music, and for us doing some serious celebrity spotting behind our Polaroid sunglasses.

Just as summer’s beginning for this year, here at Polaroid Eyewear we’re already thinking about our 2012 collection of sunglasses. I’ve just come back from Nice where I’ve met with many international buyers in the fashion, sport, optical and travel industries. They were there to choose the sunglasses they want to stock for their customer in their shops, stores and outlets next year.
I also selected the sunglasses for the UK website, and it was great to launch 2012’s fantastic collection which I’m sure you’ll enjoy next year.
It was also exciting to see the 10 new styles influenced by designs throughout the decades in our Best under the sun heritage collection for next year. This will include Polaroid’s special 75th Anniversary pair of sunglasses which is a real milestone achievement.

Mike Buss wearing his Polaroid sports sunglasses in the Sahara.
The Marathon des Sables is known as the Toughest Footrace on Earth, and Polaroid Eyewear supported Mike Buss as he recently took on this endurance event.
Covering 151 miles and run over 6 days, it’s the equivalent of 5 ½ regular marathons. Plus, competitors have to carry everything they will need for the duration on their backs in a rucksack, including food, clothes, medical kit and a sleeping bag.
And did we mention that the run is across the African Sahara desert? So runners experience mid-day temperatures of up to 120°F, and run on uneven rocky ground, and across the sand dunes. So it’s definitely not for the faint hearted.
Mike Buss tackles The Marathon des Sables.
Mike is undertaking a number of gruelling challenges this year, so we’re providing him with sports sunglasses to help protect his eyes. On completing the event, Mike said, “the Polaroid sunglasses that to be honest I wanted to hate, because I’ve used another designer pair for so long, I loved! I’m now a Polaroid sunglasses convert.”

Polaroid 1980 Image S4129B - originally designed by Kenneth Grange.
Kenneth Grange is one of Britain’s leading product designers. He’s responsible for creating some of the most iconic and familiar products around, including Kodak cameras, the silhouette for the Intercity 125 train, Kenwood food mixers, Parker pens, and the re-design of the London black cabs. He also designed a pair of sunglasses for Polaroid in the 1980s. And they now feature as Image S4129B as part of our Best under the sun heritage collection.
These sunglasses grace the front cover of Kenneth’s book, Making Britain Modern, which is also the title of his exhibition which launches at the Design Museum in London next month.
