We’re said it before, but it’s definitely worth repeating. Kids’ eyes need sun protection too! So, when you’re slathering them with sun cream, don’t forget to hand them some Polaroid sunglasses. This year’s range of kids’ sunglasses really gives you plenty of choice – whether you have a toddler or a style-wise mini-adult.
UV light can damage eyes and cause discomfort and for children, these concerns are even more important. Young eyes are more vulnerable to light because the cornea, lens and fluids are clearer and allow more light to enter the retina. According to the Eyecare Trust a Charity dedicated to raising awareness of eye health across the UK, up to 70% more UV light reaches the retina than would reach an adult eye. And, 80% of a lifetime’s UV is absorbed before a child hits his or her 18th birthday. Those figures in themselves are a good argument for keeping kids’ sunglasses at the ready.
Darkened sunglasses don’t do the job alone. In fact, darkened lenses without a UV filter result in unprotected pupils getting even larger, so even more UV light enters the eye. Look for the European Standard CE mark or the British Standard BSEN 1836:2005. Polaroid sunglasses exceed those standards and block 100% of harmful UV rays.
Our friend Dulwich Mum is really enjoying her new Polaroid sunglasses and she’s determined to keep her kids’ eyes protected this summer.
