At Polaroid, we understand the power of an icon. From our classic men’s aviators to women’s sunglasses like Pall Mall , our sunglasses capture unique moments in the history of style. Celia Birtwell is a British designer who definitely deserves our interest again this season. Her latest collection for John Lewis reminds us all that the best designers have the power to cross eras.
Celia Birtwell’s designs are closely associated with British fashion of the late 60s and 70s. Her amazing prints defined hippy chic and her clothes were worn by the Rolling Stones, Marianne Faithfull,Twiggy and a host of others. Her sketchbook held ideas about colour, form and taste that reflected the wider social and civil changes of the 60s. She was famous for her collaboration with Ossie Clark, and alongside the designer Alice Pollock, they launched their first collection for the Quorum boutique in 1966. The look was long, flattering and big on color.Their shows became events attended by London’s shimmering it crowd. They married in 1968 and divorced in 1974.
In the 80s, Celia moved from clothing to home furnishings with ease – and the designs she produced only added to her reputation for innovation and wit. In 2005, she famously created a range for Topshop which disappeared in a matter on minutes. Her latest collection for John Lewis is literally flying off the shelves right now. So, don’t leave it too long!
