Looking back at winter-getting ready for the Caledonian Challenge

From our sports collection comes Mercury - perfect for all conditions

Winter seems a long time ago – now that the days are getting longer and the Caledonian Challenge is getter closer. Roll on June – fingers crossed for great weather. But whatever the weather, Polaroid sunglasses will protect your eyes from UV light and glare.

January

Glencoe Ski Centre to Kinlochleven and back (20 miles)

This was a tough one. But we had to do it as Santa Claus had brought us all our Christmas goodies. Following the heavy snowfalls over Christmas, we had to walk in snow knee deep up the ‘Devil’s Staircase’ and this did not prove to be straight forward. At 550m (1850ft) this is the highest point along the way. We also mistimed our walk significantly, and we had to finish the walk with our headlights in the dark, not the cleverest thing to do at this time of the year. It took us almost 10 hours, 2 more than anticipated but at least we finished the walk, making it the first one we completed as a team!

February

Bridge of Orchy to Glencoe Ski Centre and back (22 miles) –

Most of the snow at low level had melted then so we decided on this fairly straight forward but long walk. It included Rannoch Moor and the old ‘paved’ section of the West Highland Way.

Thankfully, the snow is behind us and the challenge still in front.
