Welcome to this week’s Polaroid Eyewear cycle challenge update – team of colleagues cycling from Glenbrittle in Skye to Glasgow in one day. For the background and reasons why look at the previous posts on this blog page.
Its now 10 days to go until the date of the event itself, Saturday morning is ‘Last Chance Saloon’ for preparation. Last weeks training for me was severely disrupted by travelling to Asia with Polaroid Eyewear for the week and whilst I did make it to the gym bike 4 times, it’s not quite the same.
Not to worry, I have a plan for about 150 miles this week spread over the cycle to work and Saturday morning sessions, and then it will be resting and eating for a week.
For the rest of the team, Eric Boinard completed the Etape (80miles v.hilly) in a strong 5 hour time which is very encouraging for him. Bennie de Jong also was travelling last week but as yesterday (Monday 24th May) was a holiday in the Netherlands he will have been out flying along somewhere as I wrote.
The sharper readers will have this week spotted the presence of ‘filler’ replacing the lack of real training effort, and in continuation of that theme I am returning once again to the inspiration behind the challenge
In 1962 my father completed this exact route from the same Youth Hostel in Skye where we will start, to his parents house in Lloyd Street Glasgow. Whilst he (and my mother) have been having some fun with me in the last few weeks (for instance: there was no support crew in 1962!; no glucose tablets – just cheese sandwiches; and best of all the going out dancing story), they have also been incredibly supportive too. And so for the record here’s a pic of the man responsible for this nonsense, on the bike he used for Skye, c.1961.
Thanks for reading.
