Polaroid sunglasses and UV protection – more important at high altitudes.

The right eye protection makes all the difference.
Packing for a ski break? Getting ready for some spring mountain biking? Don’t forget to bring your goggles or a pair of sunglasses. When you’re at high altitudes, UV protection may be more important than you think.
Blocking glare and more.
Polaroid sunglasses have a polarizing filter that blocks glare – reflected sunlight travelling in the horizontal plane. And that makes it easier and more comfortable to see. But it doesn’t end there. Our sunglasses and goggles also come with UV filters that block 100% of dangerous ultra violet light. Like all light, UV light travels in waves, but the human eye can’t see UV rays.
UV light covers the wavelength range 100-400 nm and is divided into three bands:
- UVA (315-400 nm)
- UVB (280-315 nm)
- UVC (100-280 nm)
As UV light travels from the sun, some of it is absorbed by the atmosphere. Light in the UVA band has the greatest chance of reaching the earth’s surface. So Polaroid sunglasses protect you all the way to 400nm, covering the whole, potentially health-damaging, UV light spectrum.
The higher the altitude, the greater the exposure
According to the World Health Organisation, there are additional environmental factors that have an impact on how much UV light we’re exposed to. For skiers and mountaineers, there are two factors that are especially important:
- Cloud cover— UV radiation levels peak when there are no clouds in the sky. Even when it’s cloudy, UV radiation levels can be high due to the scattering of UV radiation by water molecules and fine particles in the atmosphere.
- Altitude—at higher altitudes, a thinner atmosphere filters less UV radiation. With every 1000 metres increase in altitude, UV levels increase by 10% to 12%.
Polaroid sunglasses protect your eyes from UV radiation – which can help prevent eye problems like cataracts as well as photokeratitis and photoconjunctivitis – inflammatory reactions that are comparable to a sunburn of the very sensitive tissues of the eyes.
Our 2010 collection includes goggles for skiing and a great selection of sunglasses for extreme sports.
They’re perfect for people who are always ready to get to the top of a mountain.
