Ah the fabled winter league. The holy grail for middle-aged men who don’t garden and want to avoid Christmas shopping until the very…last…minute. This year I signed up in September for the winter league in the hopes that someone would take pity on me and put their name next to mine– and someone did! I’m not a great golfer – and in my more paranoid moments I worry that everyone knows this and wants to avoid partnering with me and, well, loosing most of the time. But I try hard and I always buy a round of drinks after eighteen holes. This year I’m determined to get my handicap down.
And my secret weapon? Polaroid polarized sunglasses. In winter, the low light makes it hard to see. And judging distances gets to be a particular problem. When you’re out on the course, the wind can suddenly start blowing and the clouds shift away from the sun. It’s immediately a little brighter. You can see people out on greens try to shield their eyes. A little more wind and the light changes again. By just putting on a pair of sunglasses and leaving them on, I can see more consistently and judge my shots a little better. In fact, I get a better feel for the whole of the terrain, and don’t need to keep checking for landmarks. Sunglasses also protect my eyes from gusts of wind. This is particularly true of the wraparound styles. I like Sprint because the lenses give more protection and the name makes me feel powerful and successful – which helps with my mental game. On a practical level, the fit is close and the frame is very lightweight.
So wish me luck. My first game is coming up and I’m having a lesson in preparation
